Choosing the Right Tutoring Service

If you have decided that your child needs a tutor, finding an appropriate tutoring service can be a daunting task.  There a few key ideas to keep in mind to find a great tutoring service and improve your child’s grades and overall learning.

First, determine what tutoring services are available in your area.  Urban areas, for example, will have a greater number of tutoring services available than more rural locations.  You can check on which tutoring services are available on the internet and in the phone book.

Once you have a list of possible tutoring services, check with friends and family for recommendations.  Ask other parents that may have sent their children to a tutor.  Neighbors, parents of your child’s classmates, and family members are great resources.  In addition, you can ask your child’s teacher or guidance counselor for recommendations about what tutoring service has the best reputation and results.

Now that you have a few tutoring services in mind, go to their locations and speak with potential tutors.  You need to get a feel for the qualifications of the employees, and their experience with children.  The most accomplished mathematician, for example, is not necessarily a good tutor unless he or she can explain math to a struggling child.  Likewise, a person who is experienced interacting with children may not be a good tutor if you are looking for a particular area of expertise that they don’t possess.

Be sure when you are interviewing potential tutoring services that you make sure your child will see the same tutor each week.  Continuity in tutoring is very important to a child’s learning.  Also, ask about scheduling, fees, additional costs, and whether or not you can switch tutors if your child doesn’t “click” with the tutor that the tutoring service assigns.

Finally, once you have chosen a tutoring service, make sure that you take the time to get regular updates from your tutor.  After the first session, talk to the tutor about a set of goals to be met, and the specific timeframe that is appropriate.  Talk to your child as well, and make sure that they like the tutor that has been assigned.
